Oh Hell, Yes. Spider-Man Is Back in the ‘Avengers’ So Everyone Can Relax

Here's the latest on the Disney/Marvel/Sony follow-up to "Far From Home."

Tom Holland’s Peter Parker will swing right back into action in another Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, despite several earlier reports that the character was suddenly exiting the Avengers films.

On Friday, news broke that Sony and Marvel Studios have re-forged an alliance, which will allow Holland’s Peter Parker to appear in a follow-up to this year’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, which is great news for your kids since that movie ended on a pretty big cliffhanger. According to Variety, Spider-Man will stay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Producer Amy Pascal said, “I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it.”

Here’s exactly what will happen next:

  • Tom Holland will return as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in a sequel to Far From Home.
  • Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will appear in at least one more non-Spidey MCU movie, probably with some Avengers.

    That it's fun.
    That it is educational.
That it will keep my child's attention.
That it won't drive me insane.

Previously, Disney/Marvel and Sony had announced a split connected to profits and the complicated copyright issues surrounding Spider-Man relative to the rest of the Marvel comic-book characters who exist in the MCU. Because it looked like Spidey wasn’t going to stay in the MCU, several pundits wondered if Tom Holland’s web crawler could show-up in the Spider-Man-adjacent Venom series. But now that Spider-Man is back in the MCU (as though he never left) even bigger things are possible.

Far From Home ended with Peter Parker’s identity being  revealed to the public. Could this force him underground? And if so, where can he find safety? Because Disney merged with Fox, and new versions of the X-Men are coming to the MCU, perhaps Spider-Man could join some mutants in-hiding. Maybe that’s the plot of the MCU movie beyond the next regular Spider-Man film. After all, it turns out that the very first Iron Man nearly referenced both Spider-Man and the X-Men a decade before those characters could legally enter this cinematic world. And now that Spidey is safely back in the world of the Avengers, maybe he’ll mee the new Wolverine, too.
