Scurvy is making a comeback and experts believe its unexpected rise is being caused by picky eating, rather than Captain Jack Sparrow and a bunch of other pirates returning to shore to pillage and plunder the local towns.
According to a report from the Health and Social Care Information Centre, the number of admissions related to scurvy has steadily risen in the UK over the last decade, as the report indicates a 27 percent increase between 2009 and 2014. The National Health Service released data that supported the report, as it showed hospital admissions for scurvy had grown from 82 to 167 from 2010 to 2018.
The source of this unexpected return seems to be related to diet, specifically picky eating that leaves people Vitamin C deficient. Scurvy is a condition that is caused by a lack of Vitamin C in a person’s diet and the symptoms include swollen or bleeding gums, bruising constantly, and general fatigue.
Fortunately, these numbers are pretty low and honestly, that’s because it’s fairly easy to avoid getting scurvy in 2019, as Vitamin C is pretty common in the modern diet thanks to being in foods like lemons, oranges, broccoli, and peppers.
Still, while you and your family likely aren’t in any real danger of getting scurvy, the fact that it is still around should make families stop and assess their diets to ensure everyone is getting the proper amount of Vitamin C. Lisa Borg, a nutritional therapist at Pulse Light Cline, explained the importance of a well-balanced diet.
‘Scurvy, a preventable condition caused by Vitamin C deficiency and associated with seamen who spent long periods without access to fresh foods, is now on the increase in the UK,” Borg told Metro. “This is clearly due to poor dietary intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. Picky diets can lead to nutritional deficiency and poor health. The stable rule of thumb is the diet which contains the widest variety of foods has the best potential to provide all the nourishment your body needs.”
