Courteney Cox Is Coming Back for Another Scream Sequel

Do you like scary movies?

Dimension Films

Like the rest of her Friends castmates, Courteney Cox is still waiting to film the sitcom’s reunion for HBO Max. But in the meantime, she’s signed on to reprise what is arguably her second-most famous role: news reporter Gale Weathers in the Scream franchise.

That’s right, one of the biggest horror movies of the ’90s is getting a fourth sequel, as Hollywood’s fondness for millennial nostalgia plays shows no signs of abating.

Cox joins ex-husband David Arquette, reprising his role as Dewey Riley, on the fifth film in the franchise. Two other actors, Neve Campbell, who played Sidney Prescott, or Roger L. Jackson, the voice of Ghostface, have also appeared in all of the Scream films released to date. So far, there’s no word on whether they will be coming back for Scream 5, or whatever they end up calling this new project.

Creator Kevin Williamson is also returning as an executive producer. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will direct. Wes Craven, who helmed the previous four films, died in 2015.

The news was first reported by Deadline. Cox confirmed it with an Instagram post of a video of the iconic Scream face — the mask that launched a million Halloween costumes — and the caption “I can’t wait to see this face again.”

The sequel is scheduled to begin filming in the fall in Wilmington, North Carolina. It’s set for a release next year, a decade after Scream 4.
