Ryan Reynolds Says His Kids Weren’t Impressed by Him Until ‘Detective Pikachu’

Ryan Reynolds is an impressive dude — Hollywood star, sexiest man alive, legitimate contender for the title of America’s funniest dad. His daughters James, 4, and Inez, 2, were less than impressed with their A-list dad, but it looks like that might change with his latest role.

“This is the first movie I have had that they are 100 percent invested in and psyched to see. I don’t think they fully understood that that is me,” the Deadpool star told Extra.

Reynolds is talking about his starring turn as the voice of Pikachu in Detective Pikachu, the upcoming live-action Pokémon movie. The movie is getting great early reviews, but Reynolds is most excited about the buzz it’s getting with his kids.

“My daughter James said I sound like him. She said, ‘You sound like Detective Pikachu!’ and I didn’t really acknowledge it, was just like, ‘Really? Tell me more about that.’ I want to leave it as a surprise to them. We will all go see it opening day and then I will let them know it’s me.”

It’s basically the equivalent of wearing a mask on Halloween to trick your kids before taking it off. But instead of a mask, it’s a motion capture CGI pocket monster and instead of Halloween, it’s a blockbuster film.

Still, despite the bump he’ll get when his realize he’s Pikachu, Reynolds isn’t anticipating not being an embarrassing dad any time soon. “I just think they are going to literally separate their own eyeballs rolling them around me,” he said.

“When they decide to go away to college, I’m going to be that guy, ‘That’s so funny, I’m going to NYU, too!’ I’m going to be so needy. I love being around them — it’s the best thing in the world.”
