Over the weekend, two of the biggest icons of the 21st century came together on Twitter. SpongeBob Squarepants reached out to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and a glorious friendship was born. The nautically nonsensical sponge took advantage of #SaySomethingNiceDay by asking Johnson about the origin of his nickname and whether it was inspired by Squarepants’ best friend Patrick.

Yesterday, Johnson responded to SpongeBob’s friendly inquiry by listing several of his memorable nicknames, including the “inappropriate one” he earned back in college. He also let the Krusty Krab fry-cook know that he loved his work, returning the favor despite the fact that #SaySomethingNiceDay had already ended.
Hi Bob, which nickname are you referring to? Big Daddy? The Rock? Samoan Thor? Beef Piston? Or the inappropriate one I earned back in college?
Ps, love your work.

SpongeBob then let Johnson know that he may have gotten a couple of ‘cool’ nicknames during his time at boating school, as well, before offering his own take on Johnson’s famous wrestling catchphrase. And just like that, a wonderful new Twitter friendship was born on the basis of mutual admiration and mischievous college hi-jinx.
We earned one or two cool names ourselves back in boating school
At first glance, SpongeBob and the Rock might seem like they have little in common. A deeper examination, however, shows the two are kindred spirits in many ways. Both began their careers in the ’90s. Both have managed to become more popular the longer they have been around. Both have starred in several blockbuster films. And, most importantly, both have legendarily great bodies.
Who knows, maybe this new camaraderie will lead to the two teaming up for a 2019 summer blockbuster. Even better, maybe SpongeBob could be Johnson’s new partner in Baywatch 2.
