Rachel McAdams Wore a Breast Pump and Diamonds in a Powerful Photo Shoot

"Breastfeeding is the most normal thing in the world."

GETTY

Rachel McAdams caused a stir on social media Tuesday when she breastfed during a photo shoot for Girls. Girls. Girls. magazine. The picture, shared on Instagram by photographer Claire Rothstein, features a six-month-postpartum McAdams posing in designer clothes while wearing a breast pump.

“Breastfeeding is the most normal thing in the world and I can’t for the life of me imagine why or how it is ever frowned upon or scared of,” Rothstein, who’s also the founder of the magazine, captioned the photo. “I don’t even think it needs explaining but just wanted to put this out there, as if it even changes one person’s perception of something so natural, so normal, so amazing then that’s great.”

In the viral photo, 40-year-old McAdams, who gave birth to her son back in April, is dressed in Versace and Bulgari diamonds—and a hands-free pump (specifically the Brauxiliary Band in Black). Rothstein says that the breastfeeding element of the picture was completely spontaneous and only came about because “between shots [McAdams] was expressing/pumping [and] still breastfeeding.”

Rothstein, who breastfed her own child, also jokes at the end of the post, “Side note: I did not look anywhere near as fabulous as this when feeding/pumping. And that’s ok too.”

Fatherly IQ
  1. How comfortable and prepared do you feeling speaking to your children about race and systemic racism?
That's not a conversation I plan to have.
I feel prepared. I will teach them that everyone is equal.
I feel unprepared and uncomfortable, but plan to have the conversation.
I feel prepared. I will teach them that inequality is a core American experience.

A million reasons why I wanted to post this picture. Obviously #rachelmcadams looks incredible and was quite literally the dream to work with but also this shoot was about 6 months post her giving birth to her son, so between shots she was expressing/pumping as still breastfeeding. We had a mutual appreciation disagreement about who’s idea it was to take this picture but I’m still sure it was hers which makes me love her even more. Breastfeeding is the most normal thing in the world and I can’t for the life of me imagine why or how it is ever frowned upon or scared of. I don’t even think it needs explaining but just wanted to put this out there, as if it even changes one person’s perception of something so natural, so normal, so amazing then that’s great. Besides she’s wearing Versace and @bulgariofficial diamonds and is just fucking major. Big shout out to all the girls ???????? #rachelmcadams for @girls.girls.girls.magazine cover shoot ???? @clairerothstein #pleaseshare Side note: I did not look anywhere near as fabulous as this when feeding/pumping. And that’s ok too. And while the photo originally wasn’t meant to make a statement, moms everywhere are loving it. One fan commented, “Thank you @clairerothstein for capturing such a powerful image that captures what women are truly capable of doing in this world. And thank you #rachaelmcadams for proudly showing what it means to be a working mom.”
