It’s no secret that becoming a parent changes you and Prince Harry proved that this week when he was on the verge of tears while giving a speech about fatherhood. The 35-year-old monarch was speaking at the WellChild Awards, a ceremony for children with severe illnesses, along with their families and caregivers.
Harry has been attending the awards for over a decade and during this year’s speech, he got emotional while recalling how his perspective had changed during last year’s ceremony due to the fact that his wife was pregnant.
“I remember squeezing Meghan’s hand so tight during the award and both of us thinking, ‘what it would be like to be parents one day’ and more so ‘what it would be like to do everything we could to protect and help our child should they be born with immediate challenges or become unwell over the time’,” he told the crowd, who responded to Harry’s emotional response with overwhelming applause.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had their first child, Archie (who was recently confirmed to be a ginger like his dad), back in May and Harry made it clear how much becoming a father has already changed him. It’s a sentiment that every parent can relate to and credit to Harry for being vulnerable about what fatherhood has meant to him.
“As parents, being here and speaking to all of you pulls at my heartstrings in a way I could never have understood until I had a child of my own,” he said.
