The live-action Little Mermaid casting news continues to get juicier. One of the most anticipated announcements has been who will play Eric, the handsome prince who saves Ariel from drowning and subsequently wins her heart. Now, The Hollywood Reporter says a boy band singer might star; former One Direction frontman Harry Styles is under serious consideration for the iconic role.
The news follows the announcement that 19-year-old Halle Bailey will step into the red-haired role of Ariel. Disney has yet to confirm any other cast members, but the internet has nominated both Terry Crews and Idris Elba to be considered to play Ariel’s father, King Triton. Other cast rumors include Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina as Flounder and Scuttle (respectively), and Broadway’s Lin Manuel Miranda potentially providing the score.
Fans seem to be all for Styles as Prince Eric, particularly teenage girls who are swooning over the image of 25-year-old in the heroic role. “If Harry Styles gets cast as Prince Eric I will literally audition to play a grain of sand,” one such fan wrote on Twitter. Though a slew of similar tweets are rolling in after the announcement, some might be questioning Styles’ abilities.
While he certainly has the vocal chops for the part, he’s not exactly the most experienced actor. But let us not forget his role in the Christopher Nolan’s 2017 World War 2 drama Dunkirk, in which Styles had a substantial role and, in my humble opinion, totally held his own.
But does war hero translate to Disney prince? Only time will tell.
Are you here for this?
