Officials have launched an investigation in Lakewood, New Jersey after one motorist snapped a now-viral photo of a baby crawling across the road. Cory Cannon, the man who saw the baby and posted the picture to Facebook nearly mistook her for something else.
“I thought it was a toy or something until she moved,” he told the newspaper. “I knew I needed to get some sort of proof and my GPS was open on my phone, so I used my work vehicle to slow down traffic behind me and took the pic as I was exiting the vehicle and halting oncoming cars.”
Eventually, Cannon saw one of the baby’s neighbors run out into the road, pick the baby up, and run her back inside. Officials from the New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency have since been in contact with the family. According to police, neither of the girl’s parents were aware of the fact that she’d gotten out.
Most of the response to Cannon’s Facebook post has been pretty positive. A majority of commenters just seemed to be thrilled that the baby was alive and well, and more than a few had high praise for Cannon’s effort. Still, the shaming was almost inevitable as commenter after commenter chimed in to either hurl cruel names or racial epithets at the baby’s parents.
According to police the baby probably got out through a door that was left open by one of their older siblings. Per an ABC 7 report, one of the women near the baby’s home members is certain that the whole thing was just “an accident.”
