Add another dog to the canon of canine heroes. In California last Sunday, a family was saved from a fire after their pit bull alerted them to the fire that was quickly forming in their apartment building.
Nana Chaichanhda was not aware of the danger facing her family on June 3, until her 8-month-old pit bull Sasha, started banging on the back door of her home in Stockton, California. After opening her door, Chaichanhda says, Sasha bolted inside and “started barking at me like crazy”.
It was then that Chaichanhda realized her building was on fire and that she needed to get her 7-month-old daughter, Masailah, to safety. When Chaichanhda made it to her daughter’s room, she saw that Sasha was already there, trying to get Masailah off her bed by grabbing her by the diaper.
Though the fire did not spread throughout the entire building and most of the damage to their home was concentrated in the attic, Chaichanhda, Masailah, and Sasha will stay with an aunt in an apartment building not harmed by the fire.
Chaichanhda said she was grateful for Sasha’s actions. Without them, Chaichanhda says, her family may not have made it out alive.
“I owe her everything,” she said.
