Children’s book author is pretty low on the list of Paul McCartney identifiers, well behind singer, songwriter, knight, and member of the freaking Beatles. But he is the coauthor of, among other books, a children’s adventure novel called High in the Clouds that Netflix is adapting into a feature film.
The novel tells the story of Wirral, an imaginative teen squirrel who joins a gang of teenage rebels living, you guessed it, high in the clouds. He’s forced upward after antagonizing Gretsch the owl, a tyrant who steals the voice of anyone who upstages her. Sounds kind of weird, but what children’s story doesn’t?
In a statement, McCartney said that he was “thrilled to be partnering with Netflix.
“We can think of no-one better to be working with to bring our film to a global audience. I’ve always loved animated films and this is a hugely important passion project for me. I can’t wait for the world to see it.”
The film will be directed by Timothy Reckart, a first-time feature director who received an Oscar nomination for an animated short film he wrote and directed. Jon Croker, the genius behind the Paddington films, is set to write the screenplay. And music? Well as you probably guessed, Sir Paul himself is writing original songs and music for the project.
We’re excited to see the film and hear its soundtrack, but McCartney has a long way to go before he’s the go-to Beatle for children’s entertainment. That title currently belongs, of course, to Ringo Starr as the original narrator of the beloved Thomas & Friends.
Still, Paul’s making a name for himself with the kiddos. In addition to High in the Clouds, he wrote a book titled Hey Grandude! that was released earlier this year.
Alas, we’re not sure when the film will be released, but in the meantime, you can familiarize your kids with the rest of McCartney’s oeuvre,
