Latest ‘Spongebob’ Spin-Off Is a Talk Show Hosted by Patrick Star

Everything you need to know about the second Spongebob spin-off.

ViacomCBS Domestic Media Networks

The SpongeBob Cinematic Universe continues to expand, as a new “late-night talk show” helmed by SpongeBob’s best friend has been confirmed and, according to Deadline, is already in production.

The Patrick Star Show will feature actor Bill Fagerbakke reprising his role as the doltish but big-hearted starfish in a late-night talk show format. He’ll be joined by a slew of new characters, with occasional appearances from existing SpongeBob characters also expected.

The faux talk show is said to be in the vein of The Larry Sanders Show and Comedy Bang! Bang!, two series that hilariously imitated and mocked the conventions of late-night television. It also feels quite similar to Space Ghost Coast to Coast, a Cartoon Network animated talk show hosted by a beloved character taken from another series.

An exact release date hasn’t been announced, but we’d expect The Patrick Star Show to come after Kamp Koral, a spin-off series set to debut on CBS All Access, and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, the third SpongeBob feature, which will be released on premium VOD and CBS All Access instead of theaters thanks to the pandemic. Both are set for release next year.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that the excitement SpongeBob fans are going to have for this new show will likely by tampered by late creator Stephen Hillenburg‘s repeated insistence that SpongeBob spin-offs weren’t a good idea. Hillenburg even said specifically that “Patrick by himself might be a bit too much” for his own show.

So while it likely wouldn’t be the case if Hillenburg was still alive, we’ll get a chance to judge his statement for ourselves whenever The Patrick Star Show comes to television and/or streaming.
