Choosing your baby’s name is a big decision—and one that many parents end up regretting. A recent study by Channel Mum found that one in seven parents think that they made “a terrible mistake” with their child’s moniker.
Not only that but of the 2,000 parents surveyed, more than one in 10 admitted that even their kids have told them that they don’t like their name.
“Picking your baby name is one of the most important parts of becoming a parent – and its’ also something which everyone from friends and family to total strangers has an opinion on,” baby names expert SJ Strum explained on the parenting site.
Those friends and family are often the reason people regret their kid’s moniker. One in five parents said they started to hate a name after it became more popular with other children.
And nearly one in 10 blames their remorse on celebrities who give their kids the same name. For example, the list of highly-disliked names includes David and Victoria Beckham’s Harper; Cheryl and Liam Payne’s Bear; and Prince William and Kate Middleton’s Charlotte, Louis, and George.
Strum said, “Celebrity trends mean there is an ever-growing list of baby names to choose from, but this also means more opportunities to choose a name which you, or your child, then learn to loathe.”
Channel Mum also revealed the top 10 reasons that moms and dads turn on the name that they chose, with the number one reason being that the name became too popular. However, on the flipside, another often-cited cause was that the moniker was too unusual or difficult to spell. Some unhappy parents also claimed that the name no longer fit their child.
