Rejoice, impatient online shoppers! Amazon announced that it will soon be offering one-day shipping to all Prime members, a huge win for the millions of people who have had to wait two days to receive their precious packages. The commerce giant released a statement yesterday, declaring that one-day shipping will be available to Prime subscribers across the country.
“[This] opens a lot of potential for purchase and convenience for those customers,” said Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky. “We really think it’s going to be groundbreaking for Prime customers, and we’re really excited to add this capability.”
As with the current two-day shipping, not every product featured on Amazon is automatically eligible for Prime but any products that are will now be able to get to your door within 24 hours of ordering. The service will begin in the U.S. and then is expected to expand globally.
So when exactly can Prime members expect to have one-day shipping? That’s not entirely clear, as the announcement did not offer up any concrete timeline in terms of a launch date, though it’s expected to be available sometime this year.
“We’ll be building most of this capacity through the year, in 2019,” Olsavsky stated. “We expect to make steady progress quickly and through the year.”
Why is Amazon switching to one-day shipping? It’s probably a variety of factors but it seems that it is, at least in part, due to the fact that stores like Walmart and Target are starting to catch up in the retail shipping game. With this one-day shipping, Amazon can likely keep a leg up on its competitors.
