Obi-Wan Kenobi is Reportedly Getting His Own Spin-Off Star Wars Movie

Ewan McGregor is expected to return as the Jedi Master who trained Anakin and Luke Skywalker.

Star Wars

Solo might be the latest Star Wars spin-off movie heading to theaters, but, according to a new report, another beloved character from the original trilogy might be next in line to get their own film. Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Jedi master who famously trained Anakin and Luke Skywalker, is expected to be the focus of the next Star Wars story, with Disney planning to bring back Ewan McGregor to reprise the role. The report comes from TMZ, which claims that it has obtained “a newly-released production announcement from Disney” that lays out the basic plot of a film about Kenobi’s days on Tatooine after the rise of the Galactic Empire.

“Obi-Wan is on Tatooine being an elusive hermit and stuff, but secretly watches over an infant Luke Skywalker, whom he delivered to his uncle, Owen,” the notes reportedly state. According to TMZ, Disney’s future announcement of the film will make include details about the plot, which sees Kenobi is forced out of hiding when tensions begin to rise between a group of local Tatooinian farmers and the Sand People.

None of this, it should be made clear, has been confirmed by Disney or by filmmakers. However, McGregor has previously expressed his interest in returning to the role of Kenobi, so if the movie is indeed happening, it seems likely that the respected Scottish actor will be brought onboard.

This should excite any Star Wars fan, despite the fact that the prequels are widely considered a blight in the Star Wars canon. The failure of those movies have never been attributed to McGregor’s performance, which was praised at the time and actually holds up fairly well. The fact that McGregor looks increasingly like Alec Guinness, the original Obi-Wan Kenobi, also doesn’t hurt.
