Santa got a very high-profile helper to deliver presents and Christmas cheer at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington D.C. Former President Barack Obama even showed up with a big red bag of gifts and a red Santa hat, just like Old St. Nick himself.
Back when Obama was president, Michelle would go to Children’s National to read books to children every holiday season. Now, Obama has picked up where Michelle left off. The video showed Obama visiting the hospital’s playroom and patients’ rooms where he took selfies, gave gifts and big hugs. He handed out race cars, jigsaw puzzles, and other fun toys. A young girl was so shocked to see the former president visiting her that she got emotional.
At the end of his visit, the Children’s National staff, patients and their families sent him off with a spirited rendition of “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” But before he left, Obama thanked the staff for bringing cheer to the children during this time of year.
“I just want to say thank you to all of you guys,” Obama said to the staff at the Children’s National video. “I had a chance to talk to some of the wonderful kids. At a time that is obviously tough for folks, and as a dad of two girls, I can only imagine, in that situation, to have nurses and staff and doctors and people who are caring for them and looking after them and listening to them and there for them and holding their hands—that’s the most important thing there is. What a great reminder of what the holiday spirit’s supposed to be all about.”
Obama certainly brought smiles to people’s faces at Children’s National this year. Santa is no doubt happy to count the 44th president as one of his helpers.
