If you’re a parent, it’s probably hard to remember a time before Baby Shark. First, it came for the Billboard charts. Then it came for the holidays. And now, “Baby Shark” is plotting to take over your television, as Nickelodeon announced that the channel was developing a TV show based on the viral song.
“Baby Shark has captured the imagination of millions of fans around the world, so it’s no surprise it’s one of the top 10 most-viewed videos on YouTube ever,” said Ramsey Naito, Executive Vice President of Nickelodeon Animation. “At the heart of any popular piece of content is a terrific character, and we have a great opportunity to further explore the world of Baby Shark and follow this family through some great animated adventures on Nickelodeon.”
Nickelodeon is developing the show with SmartStudy, the South Korean educational entertainment company behind Pinkfong.
The craziest part? This isn’t even the only Baby Shark TV show currently in development. Earlier this year, Netflix announced that it was creating a show based on the hit song. According to a Bloomberg interview with one of the founders of SmartStudy Co.’s Pinkfong, the Korean educational entertainment company is “planning to release short videos via Netflix Inc., a cartoon series and a musical in North America this year.”
“Baby Shark” went viral in June 2016, now has over two billion views, making it one of the top 30 most-watched videos in the history of YouTube. It debuted at No. 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 List for the week ending January 12.
