What if the next Bond movie wasn’t actually about James Bond, but instead, a new MI6 agent who happens to be assigned the code number “007.” Right now, it looks like that might actually happen. Lashana Lynch of Captain Marvel fame has reportedly been cast in “Bond 25,” the as-yet-untitled next James Bond movie, slated for release in 2020. And, it turns out Lynch is playing a new agent who is assigned the number 007 in Bond’s absence.
On Sunday, The Daily Mail reported the rumor, stating that an insider claimed that one scene in the movie goes like this:
“There is a pivotal scene at the start of the film where M says ‘Come in 007’, and in walks Lashana who is black, beautiful and a woman.”
The report from the Mail states Lynch isn’t necessarily going to take over for Daniel Craig, but that she is 100 percent playing a new secret agent with his number. Officially, Lynch has already been cast in the film and publicly has been posting updates about being on the Bond set on social media.

The question now is, will Lashana Lynch replace Daniel Craig after this film? All signs point to this being Craig’s very last Bond film, which has generated a ton of speculation about who will take his place in future movies. From Idris Elba to Cillian Murphy, it even Chris Hemsworth, everyone’s name has seemingly been mentioned at some point. But, so far, all these names have been dudes. But, the latest news indicates that maybe the Bond franchise is going in a different direction altogether; the legacy of 007 could continue, but perhaps without James Bond.
If so, it’s a clever way to reboot the franchise without changing the rules of the game. And if Lashana Lynch does become the new 007 in future films, then this could mean that Bond 25 is not only Daniel Craig’s last Bond movie, but that he also might be the last actor to play James Bond, ever.
Bond 25 is out in 2020. Here’s everything we know.
