In First ‘Wreck-It Ralph 2’ Trailer, Ralph Discovers the Internet

The big guy gets involved with mobile games, celebrity tabloid listicles, and lots of cats.

Disney Animation

It’s been nearly six years since Wreck-It Ralph delighted critics and audiences alike with its clever plot, lovable characters, and hilarious jokes that both parents and kids could enjoy. Cut to Wednesday, when the first trailer for the upcoming sequel Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 (in theaters November 21) finally dropped. As the title suggests, it’s all about our titular villain with a heart of gold learning to make sense of the world wide web.

The trailer begins with the owner of Litwak’s Arcade setting up his brand new internet, much to the confusion of Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly), who doesn’t even recognize the word WiFi. Fortunately, Ralph’s best buddy Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman) is there to help him make sense of this new discovery, as they end up heading into the internet to see what they can find. Once inside the worldwide web, Ralph and Vanellope find themselves overwhelmed with everything the Internet has to offer, including mobile games, celebrity tabloid listicles, and, of course, lots of cats.

The entire trailer has a classic fish-out-of-water vibe, with Ralph struggling to grasp what is going on around him at any given moment. According to co-director Phil Johnston, the sequel will explore the different ways Ralph and Vanellope handle this exciting but frightening new world.

“Ralph is this older video game character who’s thrust into this world that’s confusing and constantly changing, and we lean into that notion that the internet is different today than it was yesterday, and it will be different tomorrow than it was today,” says Johnston. “That’s part of the challenge that Ralph in particular faces. Meanwhile, Vanellope’s much more equipped to deal with that than Ralph is. She’s younger and more spirited, and he’s sort of a big, oafish doofus who can’t quite handle it.”

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck It Ralph 2 hits theaters November 21st.
