New ‘Frozen 2’ Trailer Rips-Off Famous X-Men Storyline, Disney Style

Is Elsa about to go full-on Jean Grey here or what?

Looks like Frozen isn’t a fairy tale anymore. In a new trailer for Frozen 2, Disney traded fairytale themes for superhero action. But outside of the eventual reveal of new songs or some kind of bonkers remix of “Let It Go,” does the plot actually matter? The latest trailer for Frozen 2 certainly wants to convince you that the storyline is going to be more hardcore and higher stakes than the last time, but if you’re anything like me, all of this feels like everyone’s favorite X-Men storyline done Disney-style.

The new trailer for Frozen 2 came out on Monday, and it somehow did not include any characters bursting into song. Clearly, Disney is keeping the money-shot of the new songs a secret for a little bit longer and instead is trying to remind us that there’s some magical shit we should be worried about. If you’ve seen any movie or TV show dealing with magic or superpowers in the past couple centuries, the basic stakes of the new Frozen 2 trailer will scan as very familiar. Elsa, the ice queen, is really going hardcore on her ice magic. Ohhhh shiiiit, is she going to go too far?

Overall, the trailer treads familiar territory of Elsa reaching for deeper magic from before the dawn of Disney. Will her new powers destroy her? If you love the X-Men, all of this feels very much in line with the super-beloved Dark Phoenix Jean Grey storyline. And, if Elsa is destined to be like Jean Grey, then it seems like its about time for Anna to develop her own superpower, too? How come only one of these sisters has special powers? And, more importantly, if Elsa is like Jean Grey, who is Professor X in this scenario?

Frozen 2 hits theaters November 22, 2019.
