These Codes Help Families Find Secret Netflix Movies

Thousands of titles at your fingertips sounds great until you have to pick just one. This hack is an easy way to narrow your choices down quickly.

GETTY

Disney+ may be making an aggressive play for families’ streaming time, but Netflix isn’t about to give up. The streaming service, still the largest in the world, is continuing a holiday tradition this year by making it easier for families to find movies to watch together.

It’s a necessary hack because browsing Netflix and other streaming services usually means lots of scrolling, the modern-day equivalent of channel surfing. And like channel surfing, it can often seem as though there are tons of options but none that are really quite right. That’s why the codes Netflix released, codes that help you narrow down its massive library to a more manageable list of specific titles, are such time- and sanity-savers.

Netflix subscribers can browse these categories by entering the URL http://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/ into the address bar of a web browser and appending the relevant code to the end. In the list below, we’ve done the work for you and made the codes themselves links, no typing required.

  • Feel-good Christmas Children & Family Films: 1475066
  • Christmas Children & Family Movies: 1474017
  • Christmas Children & Family Films for ages 5 to 7: 1477201
  • Christmas Children & Family Films for ages 8 to 10: 1477204
  • Christmas Children & Family Films for ages 11 to 12: 1477206
  • Goofy Christmas Children & Family Films: 1475071
  • Christmas Children & Family Films from the 1990s: 1476024

The categories are helpfully divided by age range, and whether they’re goofy or feel-good. Three additional, nation-based categories have few to no titles at the moment, but that might change as we get closer to the holiday season.

  • British Christmas Children & Family Films: 1527064
  • Canadian Christmas Children & Family Films: 1721544
  • European Christmas Children & Family Films: 1527063

Of course, most of the streaming you and your family does is probably on a tablet or a TV or a smartphone, using apps you can’t enter a URL into. Thankfully, you can also type the exact category name into the search bar to access these categories. That’s less convenient, but it still beats sifting through the thousands of options at your fingertips.

As for the titles themselves, there are old classics like White Christmas starring Bing Crosby, cheesy romantic movies in the Hallmark vein, and plenty of original animated fare. While you might end up going to another service to find the right movie to distract your kids while you wrap presents, these codes are a great place to start your search.
