Why This Mom Accidentally Shot Her Daughter at Home

Hannah Jones, who came home from college early to surprise her mom, was met with a shattered right elbow.

An 18-year-old woman from Girard, Ohio was accidentally shot by her mother after she surprised her mom by coming home early from college, reports say. Hannah Jones, who didn’t let her mom know she was already on her way home, “ran through the front door” to surprise her mom but instead was met with a handful of gunshots. Her mom, who has a concealed carry license, reportedly thought that she was an intruder.

The police chief of Girard, John Norman, spoke on the incident: She had a gun readily available and she fired a round at someone coming through the door.” That person was her daughter, who says she immediately ducked and began screaming as her boyfriend, who was with her, called 911.

While Hannah is okay — she was hospitalized with her right elbow broken in three places and now has eight screws in three plates in her arms — she says she feels lucky to be alive. Meanwhile, Police Chief Norman says: “If you realize someone has a gun for protection, and they’re not expecting you, announce yourself when you enter the home, or even if you’re getting up to get a drink of water in the middle of the night.”
