Being immortalized in a Funko Pop! toy has become shorthand for cultural relevance and Mister Rogers seems to fit the bill for the popular collectibles. Despite a slow start after their 1998 debut–slightly soulless black eyes and unbobbleable heads were new–the blank-expressioned figurines have slowly become ubiquitous..
In keeping with Rogers’s famous rotation of wool cardigans, each edition of the Pop! toys will see him clad in a different colored sweater. The first edition will feature him in a green cardigan holding his famous neighborhood trolley, which was an integral part of the show’s stoic beauty and enchanting nature. It was the vehicle that Rogers would use to shuttle a viewer’s imagination between his real home and the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, where he would explore the theme of that particular episode.
While green will be the most widely available version, a Barnes and Noble limited edition will feature Mister Rogers in a red cardigan, holding a puppet of King Friday XIII, the infamously grouchy and long-winded monarch of the Neighborhood of Make-Believe. And if the Pop! toys aren’t your bag, Funko has you covered: At the New York Toy Fair, the company also announced that the beloved host will get his own keychain and SuperCute Plush as well.
While Mister Rogers once famously told his young viewers, “There’s no person in the whole world like you, and I like you just the way you are,” fans of the show surely won’t mind liking him in the form of a Pop! toy. If you can’t wait until June 1st to make sure you get your Mister Rogers figurine, pre-orders are currently still open on Amazon.
