“Casey is healthy, smiling and talking,” Breanna Hathaway, wrote on Friday in a post that’s since been deleted. “He said he hung out with a bear for two days God sent him a friend to keep him safe. God is good God. Miracles do happen.”
Casey Hathaway was reported missing on Tuesday afternoon after he disappeared while playing in his grandmother’s backyard in North Carolina. The Craven County Sheriff’s Office along with the FBI, U.S. Marine Corps, and over 600 volunteers spent two days searching for the young boy before he was found 40 to 50 yards in the woods in a thorn bush on Thursday.
“I heard just a crying, so I ran up to Toler Road and I got the officer,” Lisa Fraker, who discovered Casey while she was walking her dogs, said in an interview with WITN. “Next thing I know everybody was running up there and I heard [Casey] was found.”
Fortunately, Casey was largely unharmed, with only minor cuts and bruises. “He was cold, but he was verbal in command to us,” Chocowinity EMS Captain, Shane Grier, informed WCNC. “I think, for the conditions, I think he fared very well. We’re very fortunate for where we are.”
While authorities still aren’t sure exactly where Casey spent those two days he was missing, Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughes did back up the boy’s bear story. He told WCTI, “[Casey] didn’t say how he was able to survive and all that… but he did say he had a friend in the woods that was a bear that was with him.”
