Meghan Markle Says Her Dad Will Not Be At the Royal Wedding

Here's why.

GETTY

Spectators can finally stick a period at the end of the will he or won’t he? debacle surrounding whether Thomas Markle will attend his daughter Meghan’s wedding to Prince Harry his weekend. Per an official statement from Meghan through the Kensington Place Twitter account, the father of the bride will not be in attendance.

For the uninformed, the whole controversy with Thomas started when once-endearing photos of the guy reading books about Britain and working out on an exercise bike in preparation for his daughter’s wedding were revealed to have been staged by Thomas and sold for more than $100,000. Though Meghan’s half-sister Samantha Grant took responsibility for convincing her dad to take the pictures. After this came forth, Thomas then revealed the he would be undergoing heart surgery two days prior to the wedding. While Meghan hadn’t commented yet, she’s finally (and very tactfully) closed the door on the whole situation.

“Sadly, my father will not be attending our wedding,” the statement from Ms. Markle reads. “I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health.”

Apparently, Thomas told TMZ that he had suffered a heart attack almost a week ago, but checked himself out of the hospital in order to attend the wedding. Meghan’s statement suggests that the primary reasoning behind her father not attending is health-based, but that statement is at odds with what her father told TMZ. Thomas allegedly said that he wouldn’t be attending due to what the publication called a “fallout,” from the photos.

Despite the misaligned takes, the rest of Meghan Markle’s statement quickly pivoted away from his absence and back onto the upcoming nuptials.

“I would like to thank everyone who has offered generous messages of support. Please know how much Harry and I look forward to sharing our special day with you on Saturday,” her statement concluded.

Even after the controversy, it seems like Meghan Markle’s family can’t stay out of the news for more than a couple of days. Samantha Grant’s husband told TMZ that the pair were involved in a car accident that hospitalized the already wheelchair-bound Samantha for a broken ankle and fractured knee. The two were allegedly swerving to avoid the paparazzi.
