During a half-hour interview with the UK morning show Good Morning Britain, Thomas Markle finally broke his silence about not attending his daughter’s wedding to Prince Harry last month by speaking about the controversies and perpetual family drama that surrounded his potential attendance in more detail than he ever has before. Though Markle ultimately ended up not attending the wedding due to pressing health concerns that prevented him from traveling, it’s not hard to suspect that there was more to it than that.
For those who don’t quite remember the details or those who never thought knowing was that important to begin with, Markle’s actions were heavily scrutinized by the media leading up to the Royal Wedding. When photos first leaked of him working out and preparing for Meghan’s wedding, people really adored the guy. But, once it was revealed those photos were staged and sold to a tabloid for thousands of dollars, public opinion shifted against him. But in the interview, Markle explained his reasoning for staging the pictures.
“This was a presentation to me to change my image, because for the last year photographs of me were always, like, derogatory,” Markle said. “They would take pictures of my hand grabbing a beer, they’d take pictures of me getting in my car, taking the garbage out, they’d take pictures of me buying a toilet and making a big deal out of it, they’d take all kinds of pictures of me making me look negative.”
With all the negativity looming, Markle decided that the pictures were a “nice way of improving my look.” Despite the understandable motivation, Markle acknowledges that it “all went to hell.” Since the incident, he’s done his best to apologize and make up for it.
Markle also revealed that Meghan and Harry wanted him at their wedding and would have had him there were it not for his health at the time.
“They were disappointed but they both said — and Meghan cried, I’m sure, she did cry — and they both said take care of yourself, we’re really worried about you,” Markle said. “They said the important thing was that I get better.”
While Markle was sad to miss the wedding, he was ‘honored,” that Prince Charles was the one to give his daughter away. Still, he acknowledged that the whole situation is regrettable.
“[T]he unfortunate thing for me now is I’m a footnote in one of the greatest moments in history, rather than the dad walking her down the aisle. So that upsets me somewhat,” he said.
