Matthew McConaughey Hosted Virtual Bingo for Texas Seniors

Just keep B-I-N-G-O.

Staying at home isn’t stopping Matthew McConaughey from spreading his gospel of Texas chill to the masses. He posted a sublime pep talk a few weeks back, and he’s followed it up with something even more viscerally wholesome. Along with his family, McConaughey spent the weekend calling out bingo numbers via video chat for a group of residents at The Enclave at Round Rock, a senior living facility outside of Austin.

Places like The Enclave have been hit especially hard by COVID-19 due to the increased risk the disease poses to those advanced in years, and many have subsequently implemented some of the strictest self-isolation measures around.

At The Enclave, these so-called “altered operations” have been in place for five weeks, so distractions like video call bingo are extra important. Video call bingo with an Oscar winner and Texas icon? Even better.

Alas, there are just two short clips of the game online, but they’re both delightful.

Virtual Bingo with Matthew McConaughey!

Ever play virtual bingo with #MatthewMcConaughey? You’d be a whole lot cooler if you did! The residents at The Enclave at Round Rock Senior Living got to play virtual bingo with #MatthewMcConaughey and his family! Thank you to Matthew, his wife Camila, and his mom Kay for hosting our residents for a few rounds of virtual bingo! Our residents had a great time playing, and they loved talking with Matthew about his family heritage and his favorite drink.

“We got an I-24, I-24,” McConaughey says with relish, his family crowded around him before yelling “Ohhhhhhhhh!” when two of the seniors on the call signal that they have bingo.

“Richard Black is waving a hammer up high! We got Charles Kings and the iPad up high! We got two winners! Look at that board: fourth column, straight down winner! Let’s see yours Charles King’s iPad!”

According to The Enclave’s Facebook page, the residents also discussed McConaughey’s family heritage and his favorite drink during the call.

During a time when we are all working to make lemonade out of lemons, we are so humbled that Matthew took the time to play our favorite game with us. As Matthew would say, let's turn this red light into a green light!

At the end of the game, they all held up positive messages written on green poster board, a nod to this passage from McConaughey’s pep talk: “There is a green light on the other side of this red light that we’re in right now, and I believe that that green light is going to be built upon the values that we can enact right now, the values of fairness, kindness, accountability, resilience, respect, courage. If we practice those things right now, when we get out of this, this virus this time might be the one time that brings us all together and unifies us like we have not been in a loooong time.”
