The only thing more awkward than watching a sex scene with your parents is knowing that your parents have watched a sex scene with you in it. That’s how Maisie Williams feels after the steamy scene starring her character Arya aired on Game of Thrones over the weekend.
“If u feel uncomfortable just know that my mother and my step dad and my 2 sisters and my 4 brothers have all probably watched this too,” the 22-year-old tweeted on Tuesday.
The specific scene that Williams was referencing took place during Sunday night’s episode. In it, Arya loses her virginity to longtime friend and crush Gendry. Right before the battle against the White Walkers, Arya decides to sleep with Gendry, saying, “We’re going to die soon. I’d like to know what it’s like before that happens.”
Fans had mixed reactions to watching Arya’s sexual awakening. Some felt “uncomfortable” having seen her grow up from a young girl but others applauded her bravery and passion. One person summed it up best, commenting, “That was like watching my little sister. It was so uncomfortable but at the same time, very happy for you. My emotions were all over the place.”
Even Williams herself wasn’t sure how she felt about the scene at first. “At first, I thought it was a prank,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “I was like, ‘Yo, good one.’ And [the showrunners were] like, ‘No, we haven’t done that this year.’ Oh fuck!”
But she came around to it eventually, explaining it was a big moment for her character. “It’s interesting to see Arya be a bit more human, speak more normally about things people are scared of,” she said to EW.
