Following Aladdin and The Lion King, kid’s show Dora the Explorer is the latest cartoon to get a live-action remake. And in an adventure-packed first trailer released over the weekend, Paramount Pictures is giving fans an exciting sneak peek of Dora and the Lost City of Gold, which comes out in late summer 2019.
In the new flick, Isabela Moner stars as Dora, who’s still wearing her classic pink T-shirt, orange shorts, and blunt bob. When Dora’s parents set off to find the lost city of gold, Dora goes to stay with her cousins in the city—until they’re kidnapped by criminals. Dora and her friends return to the jungle where they must escape the villains and find Dora’s parents before it’s too late.
Along with Dora’s look, other aspects of the original series will stay the same, like the reappearance of Dora’s sidekick, Boots the monkey, and villainous Swiper the fox. However, there is one big change: instead of her trusty map, live-action Dora carries around a knife.
“[The movie] is really funny and action-packed. It’s almost like a Jumanji type movie,” Moner told MovieWeb. Admitting that she grew up watching the Nickelodeon show, she added that she feels honored to play the iconic role. “I think we need more Latina heroines in this industry. Marvel hasn’t done it yet.”
Directed by James Bobin of The Muppets, the film features other notable cast members like Eugenio Derbez, Michael Peña, Eva Longoria, and Danny Trejo.
Dora and the Lost City of Gold is set to be released on August 2.
