This List Shows Where Everyone Wants To Move In 2021

Here's where everybody wants to move this year — and no, the United States is not the top spot.

According to a new global survey, Canada is the country where everyone wants to move to for work this year. And a lot of it has to do with the pandemic. The North American country has knocked out a former top-spot — the United States — and it’s not hard to see why.

According to CNBC, management consulting firm Boston Consulting Group and global recruitment alliance The Network conducted a poll of 209,000 people spanning across 190 different countries. They wanted to find out under what circumstances people would want to move to a foreign country for work, and where they would move to if given the opportunity. The United States has held that top spot for a while, but not anymore. But why?

The authors of the report say the reason the United States is no longer holding the number one destination is that it has been “hurt by an inconsistent pandemic response, the adoption of more nationalistic policies, and social unrest.” Yikes!

With the United States dropping to second place, taking over as the most desirable location is 1, Canada. The authors cite a “far better job of pandemic management” as one of the leading reasons Canada has moved up. Australia, too, is desired for its pandemic response, and it sits close behind the U.S. as a major destination in third place.

“[The other countries] are also seen as having better social systems and more open cultures than the U.S.,” the authors added.

Rounding out the top ten list includes:

  • 4. Germany
  • 5. U.K.
  • 6. Japan
  • 7. Switzerland
  • 8. Singapore
  • 9. France, and
  • 10. New Zealand, making the list for the first time.

But what about cities? CNBC covered that, as well. It’s not like someone wants to just move to a middle-of-nowhere town in Australia or what have you. The companies also compiled a list of the most sought-after cities in the United States, and here they are:

The Most Sought-After Cities For Workers to Move to

  • 1. London
  • 2. Amsterdam
  • 3. Dubai
  • 4. Berlin
  • 5. Abu Dhabi
  • 6. Tokyo
  • 7. Singapore
  • 8. New York City
  • 9. Barcelona
  • 10. Sydney

Interestingly, even though the United States was the 2nd most sought-after country for people to move to, only one city was in the top 10 cities list. Huh. Meanwhile, while Amsterdam was the second most-wanted city for people to move to, as was Dubai, France, and New Zealand, no cities from those countries were on the top 10 list. Maybe people just like the idea of these places more than they know anything about them!

Another interesting fact found in the survey is that workers overall are a little less willing to move to another country for work. In 2014, 63% of people polled said they would relocate. In this year’s study, that dropped to 50%. And the drop can be attributed to the pandemic, travel restrictions, and a huge shift in companies allowing remote work – without needing to relocate.
