Liam Payne was once a member of one of the biggest musical acts in the world. These days, the former One Direction member’s most important job title is dad. Payne joined the ranks of fatherhood a little over a year ago when his girlfriend, British singer Cheryl, gave birth to their son Bear.

In a recent interview with #legend, the 24-year-old singer opened up about how he has changed since becoming a parent, along with the many unexpected challenges that come with raising a child. Payne said that having a son has brought him endless amounts of joy but he also admitted that he struggled with uncertainty and confusion at first.

“Becoming a dad is difficult and I think a lot of people struggle,” Payne told #legend. “Dads don’t really speak about it until you’re part of the club and then they’ll go, ‘Oh, wait for this, that’s in the post!’ and you’re all like, ‘Oh, thanks for the warning!” Fatherhood was totally different to what I expected.'”

Payne also admitted that at times he’s felt out of place as a father. His wife, he says, has a more natural and clear role as a parent, while he needed a bit of time to figure out his ‘place’ in the family.

“I didn’t really feel put out, but I was like, ‘Where’s my place?’ I was desperate to find out what I was meant to do ⏤ changing nappies and whatever else. For me as a dad, you’re just taking care of everything as much as you can, making sure he’s got a smile on his face.”

And finally, Payne told #legend how his perspective on life has changed since he had Bear, including redefining what it means to be successful. “Success has become a different thing after having Bear. The idea that I want to provide everything for my son ⏤ and who wouldn’t? You’d jump on a hot fire for them. I have to do all this stuff because I want to build a bright future for him.”
