Kristen Bell Shares the Genius Reason She Lies to Her Kids About Their Birthdays

It's just a little white lie!

The most honest celebrity parent in America is at it again. While actress Kristen Bell was promoting the third season of the smash-hit show about the afterlife, The Good Place, on The Today Show she also talked about her parenting style. Bell and her husband Dax Shepard have two daughters Lincoln, age 5, and Delta, age 3. They have a very interesting take on parenting. They’re pragmatic and usually very honest with their children. They’ve even gone so far as to explain the fundamentals of sex to them.

But Bell copped to telling some little white lies when it comes to her daughters’ birthdays. Birthdays are always huge productions for children. They change so much with every passing year. It’s obvious why parents want to have big celebrations, so they can look back on this time fondly before their children turn into mopey teens. The Good Place star admitted that she took advantage of the fact that her daughters haven’t really grasped the concept of a calendar yet. They might know the date of their birthday, but they don’t necessarily connect to the days of the week.

“I’ve also lied to them about when their birthday is,” Bell said on The Today Show. “Well, like, if it’s a Wednesday, and we can’t celebrate and we’re both working late, then guess what? Your birthday is Saturday. They don’t know!”

She also revealed in the interview with The Today Show that she lets her kids wear dirty clothes sometimes, but she does draw the line at dirty diapers. If her child’s diaper is dirty, Bell will change it immediately. She cares deeply about her children’s comfort, but little white lies about time and birthdays are another matter.
