Kids Can Now Trade In Their Prosthetics For Iron Man Arms

Missing a limb will make a kid the coolest in class if Open Bionics has its way. Thanks to a partnership with Disney, the company that makes prosthetic arms just unveiled a line of artificial limbs inspired by Iron Man, Frozen, and Star Wars.

“Now kids can get excited about their prosthetics,” says Open Bionics, which may or may not be run by a mysterious billionaire playboy. “They won’t have to do boring physical therapy, they’ll train to become heroes.” The colorful and LED-studded devices were unveiled at Techstars’ Disney Accelerator Demo Day, a program that encourages innovation by offering funding and creative resources such as free access to Disney characters. Open Bionics is best known for their Dextrus hand, a prosthetic arm available for free download and 3D printing.Motivation for the prosthetic hand comes from discovery that users are often more concerned with the appearance and weight of a prosthetic arm than its functionality. The new superhero prostheses are lightweight and make for proud wearers, but the Force is not included.
