So how exactly did a gun end up in a couch at an IKEA in Fishers, Indiana? It turns out a man was couch-shopping at the store earlier in the day and when he sat down on that particular couch, he didn’t realize that the gun he was carrying had fallen out of his pants. Later in the day, a group of kids sat on the same couch and one boy found the fully loaded gun and decided to pull the trigger, setting off the gun in the store.
Fortunately, nobody was injured by the accidental gunshot and the store even remained open afterward but, given the potential severity of the situation, IKEA did issue an apology to the boy and his family.
“We take this incident very seriously and we have offered the family of the child involved our sincerest apologies,” the statement said.
According to WTTV, IKEA has a strict no weapons policy for its stores but employees were not aware that the man had brought in a gun with him. While it is unclear if the man will end up facing charges, Fishers Police Seargent Tom Weger said that it should serve as a reminder of the importance of gun safety and responsible gun ownership.
“It’s important to remember that if you are going to carry a firearm on your person, that you make sure you’re under control of it at all times. It’s just part of gun ownership, responsible gun ownership,” Weger said.
