Over the weekend, Khabib Nurmagomedov made headlines when he defeated Conor McGregor to win the UFC lightweight title. Khabib’s dominant performance was undoubtedly impressive but the real story came immediately after the fight when the 30-year-old Russian mixed martial artist jumped the Octagon fence and began to attack Dillon Danis, McGregor’s training partner, sparking an all-out brawl which resulted in Khabib being escorted out of the venue.
After the fight, Khabib expressed regret for his actions and stated, “I know my father’s gonna smash me.” His grim prediction appears to be true, as Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov confirmed that he was making plans to punish his son.
“I will impose a punishment tougher than the UFC’s,” Abdulmanap said. “I warned him. For me, discipline comes first. You do whatever you want in the Octagon, [but] outside — this is the border of civilians, where there are children, women, strangers.”
As of now, it’s not exactly clear how Abdulmanap will punish his son but it will likely be pretty severe given the fact that Khabib’s $2 million purse is currently being withheld and the UFC is reportedly considering suspending him and stripping Khabib of his lightweight belt. Perhaps Abdulmanap will go the route of public shame by forcing him to wear a shirt that reads something along the lines of “I jumped out of the Octagon and started a brawl moments after winning the most highly-touted UFC fight of the year.” Or may Abdulmanap will hit him with the most brutal parenting punishment of all: Letting his son know that he’s not mad, he’s disappointed.
Only time will tell exactly what type of discipline will face from his tough-as-nails father but rest assured we will be waiting anxiously to discover what this mysterious punishment will be. Hopefully, Khabib will learn his lesson and not be an extremely sore loser who spoils what should have been the crowning achievement of his already impressive career.
