Part of the success of the original Jurassic Park was without a doubt, super-realistic CGI dinosaurs. But, if you’re getting serious, the real reason the 1993 film is a classic is its original cast members. No, we’re not talking about Wayne Knight and Cameron Thor (We’ve got Dodgson here!); the real magic of the first film is all about the terrific trio of Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neil, and Laura Dern.
On Tuesday, the official Jurassic World Twitter account announced that the characters of Dr. Alan Grant, Dr. Ellie Sattler, and Ian Malcolm will return for Jurassic World 3; which is, technically the sixth film in the Jurassic franchise. This is great news and probably the first time you can put money on one of these new Jurassic movies not totally sucking.

The biggest problem with every single sequel to Jurassic Park is that none of them have reunited the core three characters from the first film. As Malcolm, Goldblum appeared in The Lost World, and more recently in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Meanwhile, Sam Neil and Laura Dern previously returned for the 2001 film Jurassic Park III, which is mostly memorable because the “III” was styled as a dino-slash on all the posters. (Also, this is the one where Dr. Grant has dreams about a talking Velociraptor and at least one version of the screenplay was written by Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor right after their success with Election.)
Anyway, the fact that director Colin Trevorrow is smart enough to bring back these actors proves the movie will actually be an event. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are totally fine by the way, but the irreplaceable chemistry of the core three characters is really what made the first film sing. Great dinosaur movies can be made, but they need great humans hanging out with those dinosaurs.
Now, let’s just hope somebody thinks about bringing Dodgson back as a clone. Wait. Does anyone care?
Jurassic World 3 will focus on the consequences of Fallen Kingdom, which means dinosaurs are just running loose on Earth. Hopefully, this means Alan Grant will end-up riding one of them.
Jurassic World 3 hits theaters on June 11, 2021.
