The fourth film in the John Wick franchise is scheduled for a Memorial Day weekend 2022 release, but the powers that be are already plotting their next move. In other words, John Wick 5 is officially happening, and it’s going to come sooner than you think.
John Feltheimer, CEO of Lionsgate, made the announcement on an earnings call.
“We’re also busy preparing scripts for the next two installments of our John Wick action franchise, with John Wick 4 slated to hit theaters Memorial Day weekend 2022. We hope to shoot both John Wick 4 & 5 back to back when Keanu becomes available early next year.”
Previously, only John Wick 4 had been confirmed, so that there will be a fifth film in the series is quite exciting for fans. But that’s not all Wickheads have to look forward to: there’s also Ballerina, a spin-off film about a young female assassin (and ballet dancer) seeking revenge on people who killed her family, and The Continental, a spin-off TV series about the assassin-friendly hotels that Wick stays in during the films, to look forward to. However, it looks like, at least in the case of the Continental, the spin-offs will likely come before the movies.
Since Keanu Reeves and company are going to shoot it right after they finish John Wick 4, that should mean an earlier release date for the fifth film than if there was a break between filming.
Reeves is currently shooting The Matrix 4, which had to pause production for two months thanks to COVID-19. Eight weeks were added to the schedule to make up for the delay, which hopefully means that shooting on the John Wick films will only be minimally delayed and fans can enjoy the gory and endless onslaught of violence that the Wick films are known for.
And to round out Reeves’ own personal trilogy of franchises, the third Bill and Ted movie hits (not that many) theaters and video-on-demand services later this month, kicking off a most excellent few years for fans of the star.
