John Mulaney is making a new TV series for kids and it sounds like the whole thing might just be one hilarious blooper reel. The actor behind Big Mouth and the hilarious Netflix comedy special Kid Gorgeous is pursuing a new project that could be the next big children’s TV series and not make parents want to roll over and die. He claims the as-yet-untitled series is “something I’d like to watch, and I don’t wanna do anything anyone else is doing.”
On Thursday, Esquire published a lengthy profile of Mulaney charting his rise to prominence in stand-up and with sketch comedy like Oh, Hello, to his current plan of shaking-up the children’s entertainment industry. Mulaney claims his new kids’ series is partially based on 3-2-1 Contact, a science-focused PBS which ran from 1980-1988. He also says the show will honor the traditions of Sesame Street.
Right now, Mulaney’s new kids’ show is in production and labeled a “variety show.” And according to Esquire, he’s promised the children in the series that the whole thing will play out like one long blooper reel. It doesn’t have a name yet, but if it’s science-based variety show combined with Mulaney unique and smart-as-whip brand of humor, then the chances are no one is going to want to miss this. If there’s one thing Mulaney has proven in the past few years is that he’s in touch with the zeitgeist in a way few male comedians are. He’s a good dude who also is a funny dude. And, when it comes to kids’ entertainment, we need all of that energy that we can get.
In the meantime, adults (and kids, but we don’t think they’ll really get it) can watch Kid Gorgeous on Netflix right here.
There is no news yet about the name or release date of John Mulaney’s new kid’s series.
