Jennifer Lopez thought she knew what being a mom was like—until she actually became one. In a YouTube video titled “Twin Talk: AMA with Emme and Max,” the 49-year-old opened up about how her expectations of parenthood changed after giving birth.

“You cannot imagine what it’s like to be a mom until you are a mom,” Lopez said to her tweens, who interviewed her for the adorable video segment. “I remember I used to give my friends who had kids advice all the time and they would look at me like I had three heads. And when I had you two, the minute I had you two, I literally apologized to all my friends.”

According to Lopez, she told her fellow parent friends, “I’m so sorry I didn’t understand what it is to have a child and everything I ever said to you about raising kids, forget it and I’m sorry and that’s a true story.”

The singer gave birth to fraternal twins, Emme and Max, in 2008 with then-husband Marc Anthony. And it’s something that she has never taken for granted. In a 2017 interview with TODAY, Lopez gushed, “[My children] just made my life so much better. I’m forever grateful that … you know, I didn’t have kids until later and so I almost thought that it wasn’t going to happen for me, so I’m very aware that I was blessed with that.”

During their recent YouTube episode, the 11-year-olds also asked their mom about how she felt when she learned she was having twins. “I started laughing hysterically,” she said, describing the moment that the doctor told her. But on a more serious note, she added, “You realize that the love you have for your kids is so deep that all the normal rules for other people don’t apply.”
