Those James Bond Casting Rumors Are Getting Complicated

Did one actor confirm or deny he's the next 007?

MGM/United Artists

Long before there was even a foreseeable end to Daniel Craig’s tenure as James Bond, fans have been begging for actor Idris Elba to pick up the mantle. A couple of recent tweets from Elba gave Bond fans a brief dash hope before thrusting them right back into speculation mode just as quickly.

Knowing that there are millions of fans who would love nothing more than for Elba to play James Bond, the actor tweeted out a strange selfie with a rather pointed caption that reads: “my name’s Elba, Idris Elba.” For a moment it seemed as if there was a glimmer of hope, but just a few hours later Elba tweeted again, this time telling his followers, “Don’t believe the HYPE…”

The UK tabloid The Daily Star reported that director Antoine Fuqua was quoted saying Elba was apparently in the running to play Bond in the next film, but director’s agent soon released a statement decrying the quote as totally made up. Craig has confirmed that he will be reprising his role as the most dapper covert operative in history for the next film, but the truth remains that he’s actually been looking for a way off of the Bond gravy train for years. Craig was hilariously quoted as saying that he wants nothing more than to move on and that if he reprised his role as Bond, “it would only be for the money.”

That said, why not give the role to Elba? He can certainly ooze the suave-indifference-coupled-with-a-compelling-sense-of-duty that makes James Bond, well, James Bond. He’s definitely got the accent, and given that his character was killed off in Avengers: Infinity War, he has no more big movie roles to reprise at the moment. Still, Elba is currently back to donning his famous trench coat as he shoots the fifth season of the acclaimed British detective drama Luther in which Elba plays the titular role of DCI John Luther.

So if you need a nice fix of Elba suiting up to take out a few bad guys, there’s something to look forward to no matter what.
