Rejoice: Hot Wheels Is Making a ‘Mario Kart’ Line of Toys

As our favorite plumber says after using a dash mushroom "whoopee!"

Nintendo

Some ideas are so good, so natural, that you wonder what took them so long to become reality. Canned cocktails and summertime. Marshmallows and Oreos. To that list you can add Mario Kart, the beloved racing video game, and Hot Wheels, the beloved car and track toys. They are a natural fit, and luckily their two parent companies are finally bringing us the mash-up of our dreams.

At Comic-Con in San Diego, Nintendo and Mattel announced a new line of Mario Kart-themed Hot Wheels vehicles. Mario, Luigi, Peach, Wario, Rosalina, Toad, Bowser and Yoshi will all be available, along with their signature Mario Kart rides. Donkey Kong must have been waylaid by a blue shell because, as of now, he won’t be part of the series. The designs are taken from from the latest iteration of the game, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Luckily for us, Mattel is also planning Hot Wheels versions of yet to be announced classic Mario Kart tracks. Details have yet to be announced, but we have our fingers crossed from some sweet real life Rainbow Road and Koopa Troopa Beach tracks.

At last year’s Comic-Con, the two companies announced a somewhat confused toy that allowed you to lay out track tiles and coins on your floor and then race Mario and Luigi using remote-controlled racers. This year, they’re jettisoning the tech and giving the people what they want: simple recreations of beloved characters and vehicles sans gimmickry.

The only bad news (besides the lack of a Donkey Kong toy) is that you’ll have to wait until June of 2019 for the crossover event of the century. At $5, they won’t withstand a lightning strike, but you will finally be able to recreate the crowning achievement of your life: that time you came from behind to take the win from your brother at Bowser Castle.
