Hospital Charges New Parents For Skin-To-Skin Contact After Their Baby Is Born
As a parent you’re likely familiar with the phrase “I don’t mind spending money, but I hate wasting it.” And yet you might also be in touch with feeling like you’re lighting cash on fire. Even before you get to hang out with your kid at home, they could run you up to $36,000 in bills alone. But you may not be familiar with the charge of nearly $40 for holding your own kid, which one new dad posted about on Reddit this week.
The Utah dad under the username halfthrottle shared his hospital bill that sparked a discussion thread with over 11,000 comments and 6,200 upvotes within a day — which according to the youths, is pretty significant. He blacked out the facility name and did not call them out directly, but rather called out the absurdity of a healthcare system that will charge you $39.35 for skin-to-skin contact after a C-section. “Everyone involved in the process was great, and we had a positive experience. We just got a chuckle out of seeing that on the bill,” he wrote. Since holding them is free everywhere else, it really makes you wonder if anyone ever says no thank you.
As one nursed explained, this charge is a relatively new thing and only exists because the skin-to-skin contact requires an extra RN to be present. Still, it does speak to what your hospital and Time Warner bills have in common, and it’s all the robbery. The biggest difference is that the birth of your kid is supposed to be the most important day of your life (sorry, wedding anniversary), so you might want to let it go. But plenty of other Reddit users shared similar stories of haggling down their bills. So if sticking it to the man is your first victory as a new father, keep fighting the good fight.
