Idris Elba is the Perfect Villain in First ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ Trailer

The highly-anticipated spin-off has all the insane action that fans have come to expect from the 'Fast and Furious' franchise.

The first trailer for Hobbes & Shaw dropped today and it looks like the highly-anticipated Fast and Furious spin-off will be packed with all the insane action and clever one-liners fans have come to expect from the mega-franchise.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham are reprising their roles as Super-Jacked Security Service Agent Luke Hobbs and the mildly villainous anti-hero Deckard Shaw. The two were adversaries in FF7 but were frenemies by F8. Now, they are being forced to work together to track and take down Brixton (played by Idris Elba), who may or may not have superpowers.

Fans may have been worried about what the first-ever Fast and Furious without Vin Diesel would look like but based on this trailer, it seems like Statham, Johnson, and Elba are more than enough star power combined to keep viewers from missing Dom too much.

On the whole, Hobbs & Shaw looks like it is bringing a much lighter approach than the eight Fast and Furious films, with Brixton cheekily announcing that he’s the “bad guy” before annihilating a group of disposable mid-level government operatives. The trailer even plays War’s “Why Can’t We Be Friends” while the titular duo simultaneously calling each asshole after being told they need to work together, making it very clear Hobbs & Shaw are more of an odd couple than two peas in a pod.

David Leitch (Deadpool 2) will be directing the spin-off, with Vanessa Kirby joining the franchise as Shaw’s sister Hattie and Helen Miren returning as Magdalene, Shaw’s mother. Hobbs and Shaw will be released on July 26, 2019.
