Rossia Pacifica Is An Adorable Sea Critter That Looks Like A Pixar Character

YouTube / EVNautilus

Finding Dory was fun for the whole family but the scientific takeaways were limited to what the sound of Albert Brooks’ voice does to dad’s brain (spoiler: makes it super chill). But a recent video released by the Exploration Vessel (E/V) Nautilus — a global research effort directed by the dude who found the Titanic — gives your kid the best of both worlds: A googly-eyed stubby squid that Pixar probably wishes it could hire.

The species, known as Rossia Pacifica, isn’t a new discovery — this is just the first time one’s been found that looks like a full on emoji. “It’s like some little kid dropped their toy,” one researcher agreed. It resembles a cross between an octopus and squid, but is more closely related to a cuttlefish. (Your kid could probably get away with calling it a cutie fish.) Samantha Wishnak, a science fellow on board the Nautilus explained to NPR that the adorable wide-eyed expression was likely due to it being surprised to see a 5,000 pound robot moving towards it … or maybe it was just ready for it’s closeup.

Wishnak also noted that the stubby squid isn’t actually purple, but it changes to that color due to a “little sticky mucus jacket.” In other words, it already has something in common with your kid and they’ll be fast friends. The best part is you both can watch expedition live anytime and hopefully catch the next cartoony discovery.
