The 50 Companies That Make Job Interviews Less Like Work

If interviewing for a new job reminds you of dating, that’s mostly because both involve wearing a clean shirt and wasting time. But if you’re in the market for a new job, the career website Glassdoor will help you waste a little less time kissing frogs (or shaking their hands). Their analysts looked at more than 300,000 interview reviews submitted over the past year, and ranked the 50 best companies to interview at based on candidate feedback, question content, and overall interview difficulty. Companies had to receive 100 ratings, have 1,000 employees, and get a positive review experience score higher than 82 percent in order to rank.

Despite certain STEM stereotypes, the list isn’t just Google written 50 times in a row. That’s partially because this list specifically ranks the interview experience over the employee experience, which evaluates what you stand to gain even if it’s not the gig. Surprisingly, the Cleveland-based paint company Sherwin-Williams ranked the highest for the best candidate experience overall, followed by the Chicago accounting network Grant Thornton LLP, and the Peoria, Illinois construction equipment company Caterpillar Inc. Apparently Midwestern manners are a quality everyone is looking for. The rest of the top 10 represents a variety of industries, giving you a ton of options for a potential career change: BNY Mellon, J. Crew, H&R Block, Southwest Airlines, Ernst & Young, Walt Disney Company, and PwC. You can likely guess which company your kid would be the most into (and it’s not the one that helps you file your taxes).

Though you may be more compelled to look at a list of the best places to work, don’t rule out how a challenging interview process can predict future employee satisfaction. “Recent Glassdoor economic research finds that more difficult job interviews are statistically linked to higher employee satisfaction,” Lisa Holden, the site’s employer engagement manager told Fast Company. “A 10 percent more difficult job interview process is associated with 2.6 percent higher employee satisfaction later on.” Not only will this help you with your job hunt, it will explain a lot about your first date with the missus.
