‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ Trailer Feels Like a Commercial For ’80s Toys

It looks good, but is this just a big-budget commercial for toys we all played with like 30 years ago?

Ghostbusters purists shouldn’t be real, but it seems like the new trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife is attempting to pander to this somewhat invisible demographic. Back in 2016, a bunch of sexist weirdoes got on YouTube and decided to claim the all-female Ghostbusters was DOA. It wasn’t, but they nonetheless succeeded in generating enough bad buzz for that movie that just four years later we’re set for another reboot of Ghostbusters. Only this time, we’re meant to believe the new film, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is actually a sequel to the two ’80s movies: Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II.

The just-released trailer for Afterlife marginally feels like it takes place in the “actual” ‘Busters universe, but it also has a decidedly toy-commercial feeling to it, too. Remember those toy commercials in the ’80s and ’90s where little kids would find “real” Ghostbusters gear? Yeah, that’s kind of what this trailer is, only it’s going to be an entire movie. While the premise of Stranger Things, But It’s Ghostbusters is a nice idea, it’s unclear if this is actually enough for a whole movie. Here’s an old commercial for reference.

Most interestingly, though Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Sigourney Weaver are set to return for this film, we don’t see any of them in this trailer. So, visually this movie does remind us of all that old stuff from the ’80s, but the tone is truly is closer to that of a toy commerical than, say, The Goonies.

We’re holding out hope that this movie is awesome, but maybe the best way to think about it is this: Perhaps, this is the first Ghostbusters movie that is actually for children, and not, inner children.
