After months of rumors, the news has been confirmed by HBO Max—a Friends reunion is in the works. The popular sitcom is coming back to TV with all six original Friends for an exclusive HBO Max Special. There aren’t a lot of details available yet, but here’s what we do know.

HBO Max secured all six original members of the show because we all know it wouldn’t be a show if they didn’t all give the go ahead. Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, Jennifer Aniston and Matthew Perry have signed on for the HBO Max special which will debut in May 2020. Each of them making an alleged $2.5 to $3 million each to reprise their roles from the TV show which ended just over 15 years ago.

“Guess you could call this the one where they all got back together — we are reuniting with David, Jennifer, Courteney, Matt, Lisa, and Matthew for an HBO Max special that will be programmed alongside the entire Friends library,” Kevin Reilly, HBO Max’s chief content officer, said in a statement.

He adds, “It taps into an era when friends — and audiences — gathered together in real-time and we think this reunion special will capture that spirit, uniting original and new fans.”

The reunion special will be filed on the same Stage 24 where the original show was shot. Ben Winston is returning as the director and executive producer, along with David Crane, Kevin S. Bright, and Marta Kauffman as producers. With the original cast and crew, it’s gearing up to give audiences the same feel as the original Friends show, but will it be a real episode or a glorified talk show look-back kind of thing?

There haven’t been any details released on how long this special episode will run – are we looking at a 30-minute episode or a longer one to actually be able to give a real storyline for each character? The cast have been quiet about the show, not giving any details about what viewers can expect, but we will likely find out soon enough.

The Friends HBO Max special is set to launch along with the entire library of Friends, when the streaming service officially launches this May.
