A Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reunion is coming to HBO Max just in time for the show’s 30th anniversary. The unscripted special is described as “a funny and heartfelt night full of music, dancing, and special surprise guests, in honor of the series that ran for six seasons and 148 episodes.” It will be filmed on September 10, 30 years to the day after the pilot aired on NBC.
Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s media company is developing the special. Series stars Alfonso Ribeiro, Tatyana Ali, Karyn Parsons, Joseph Marcell, Daphne Maxwell Reid, and, of course, DJ Jazzy Jeff have also signed on to appear in the special.
The special will presumably also include some kind of tribute to James Avery, who sadly passed away in 2014 due to complications from heart surgery. His Uncle Phil was one of the best sitcom dads ever despite, well, being an uncle to the show’s protagonist.
The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max, where a similar special reuniting the cast of Friends is also set to air (just as soon as they can film it). The nascent streaming service is also hosting a reunion of the cast of The West Wing for a theatrical staging of “Hartsfield’s Landing,” an episode from the third season.
News of the Fresh Prince reunion comes on the heels of the news that Will Smith is developing a drama series with hourlong episodes based on the gritty short film “Bel-Air” that went viral last March.
The reunion special is scheduled to stream sometime around Thanksgiving.
