First Trailer For ‘The Happytime Murders’ Shows Much Dirtier Side of the Muppets

Sesame Street, this ain't.

STX

For all of the wonderful things The Muppets has given us, the beloved stuffed creatures never really dove enough into what goes on when the cameras aren’t rolling. Now, The Happytime Murders, a new raunchy, dark comedy, looks like it’s going to show us way more than we ever needed about puppets’ private lives. Even in its first, very NSFW trailer, the movie looks to include puppet murder, sex, drugs, and fountains upon fountains of puppet ejaculate. Yep.

The Happytime Murders stars Melissa McCarthy as a grizzled detective in a world where humans and puppets co-exist. After former puppet cast-members of a beloved TV show, The Happytime Gang, begin turning up dead, McCarthy and her vulgar puppet partner try to track down the culprit.

The premise might sound a bit like Roger Rabbit meets the Muppets, but, oh boy, this trailer shows it’s so much more NSFW than that. In it, we see Melissa McCarthy doing lines of glittery puppet ecstasy and getting propositioned by puppet prostitutes with some “rotten cotton” as well as puppets blown away by shotgun. Oh yeah, and the whole thing closes out with a sequence of violent puppet ejaculate coating an office.

The Happytime Murders is directed by Brian Henson, the son of the Muppets creator Jim Henson and the director behind The Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island. While there’s legitimate puppet pedigree behind the project, Henson’s certainly taken a much more adult approach than in the past, to say the least.

The film, which also stars Maya Rudolph, Joel McHale, and Elizabeth Banks, opens August 17. Watch the trailer below and never look at puppets the same.
