Ryan Gosling is the Perfect Neil Armstrong in the ‘First Man’ Trailer

Gosling is teaming up with 'La La Land' director Damien Chazelle for a film that is sure to generate some Oscar buzz.

First Man

The trailer for First Man dropped over the weekend, offering the first glimpse of the upcoming Neil Armstrong biopic, including Ryan Gosling‘s performance as the titular first man to walk on the moon. And, if your partner loved La La Land, you can maybe convince them that this movie is basically the sequel because it’s directed by Damien Chazelle and he’s the guy who directed La La Land. So, no matter what, First Man is going to look and sound freaking great.

In the trailer, Gosling is unsurprisingly perfect as Armstrong, as he manages to capture the determination and courage that Armstrong had to have in order to become the first man to walk on the moon. Gosling resists overacting in the trailer, allowing for the obvious danger present in the situation to speak for itself. Gosling’s Armstrong fully understands the risk of the mission he is undertaking, which makes his desire to get to the moon that much more remarkable.

The trailer also briefly hints at the strain a mission of this magnitude surely must have taken on Armstrong’s family. Janet Armstrong (Claire Foye), his wife, is shown warning him about the high level of peril present in his mission, while one of Armstrong’s sons is shown asking whether or not dad is going to be coming back. Armstrong wasn’t just taking a risk with his own life, he was taking a risk that could impact his entire family. It’s a responsibility that is rarely mentioned when we learn about the moon landing and hopefully, the film gives us a deeper look at how his wife and kids were affected by Apollo 11.

While Gosling might clearly be the stand-out of the trailer, he is hardly the only major talent who worked on this film. Claire Foye, Kyle Chandler, and Jason Clarke also star in First Man, which is being directed by Damien Chazelle, who worked previously with Gosling on La La Land. And it looks like the director-actor duo will be earning themselves a few more Oscar nominations with First Man, as the biopic has already managed to generate some award season buzz.

First Man comes to theaters October 12, 2018.
